Beken Collection

The Beken family of Cowes, Isle of Wight have been photographing maritime life in Cowes since 1880, creating a stunning visual record of Isle of Wight industry and RNLI lifeboats. In 2018, the RNLI acquired the original lifeboat glass plate negatives (including the copyrights) from the Beken family. During the same year, the negatives were digitised as part of a Heritage Lottery Fund project by the RNLI Heritage Team.

We are delighted to have been given a copy of the 3 photographs and permission from the RNLI Heritage Team to use them on our website.

The photographs were taken during February 1939 of the Ann Letitia Russell on her final sea trial at Cowes, Isle of Wight.

The 3 photographs are a valuable asset to our collection of photographs of the Ann Letitia Russell helping us obtain the detail we need to restore her.
